In a game that had great

In a game that had great importance for both sides for different reasons, cahir needed a point to secure their premier status for next season and town were chasing all three points to stay on course for yet another league title. This was always going to be a tight and tense affair. both teams took a while to settle into the game and neither side created any worthwhile chances in the first quarter of an hour . the first real chance fell to town when a deflected shot had our keeper beaten only for the crossbar to come to our aid. shortly afterwards cahir nearly went ahead when Brian Sweeney just but the ball wide of the post. with the half hour mark approaching and cahir looking very comfortable , we were hit by a sucker punch from town when a long ball was not dealt with by our defence , and Ian Barnes struck a great shot which was brilliantly saved by Ritchie Tobin, but Dwayne burns was first to react and slot the ball to the net..the rest of the half was evenly contested and the only real chance was created by cahir , when a header form Eanna o Gorman was tipped over the bar by the clonmel keeper.
HALF-TIME CAHIR PARK 0 CLONMEL TOWN 1
The second half was once again very evenly contested, and both defences were well on top. cahir knew if they could keep it tight and nick one goal they would be safe form relegation. no one who saw this game could fault the spirit and endeavour of our players, but we could not create any clear cut chances against a very mean town defence. then with ten minutes to go all our good work went up in smoke when we conceded a second, confusion in our defence saw the ball drop to Dwayne burns and his shot was deflected into our net, this took the wind out of our players and with two minutes left on the clock , a cross from the left found Ian Barnes at the far post and he rose un challenged to nod the ball home for towns third. now we must rely on beating bansha Celtic in a relegation playoff to stay in the premier division.
